Mr. Cardinal
It was eight below zero when we got up this morning and it never got over five during the day. Buffalo is still experiencing a blizzard, yet we got very little new snow. The wind was intense, though, so the windchill was about -20. Fredonia will have another snow day tomorrow. All over Facebook, teachers and students alike are rejoicing. However, this is only the first week of January and there are ten more weeks of winter. The first musical rehearsal is postponed again, as is the parent meeting. Next week, we will try again.
I was stunned by the number of birds at the feeders. First the cardinals arrived. Facing into the wind, they swayed with the feeders. Not long after, a chickadee, then a nuthatch, a sparrow and a pair of bluejays. The turkeys came later and finally, one lone doe.
I spent about six hours on the book today. I finally decided to create a new chapter on group dynamics and trail etiquette. It was far too much to squeeze into the instruction chapter. They are distinct and important topic as well. I'm thinking about a broader theme that links them. Both are ways to direct behaviors in a positive way to benefit the group as a whole, but I can't come off sounding like a psychologist.
Several of the other major topics have back up content chapters also, like equipment and field sanitation. There are six pages on cook classes, too. Maybe that ought to be separated out into its own chapter. I don't know. I need to get outside for a walk and think it through again.
I made significant progress on the first aid lesson, the nature study lesson and the t-shirt selection process. Even after cutting out five pages for the group dynamics and trail behavior, I still have 26 pages for classes. There's easily two or three more day's work left on this chapter.
