College students all over the country are preparing to leave for a new semester. Packing up, buying supplies, finishing their jobs and saying good-bye to family and friends. Annie kindly gave us an afternoon before she returns to Oswego next week for her junior year.
I remember the summer before Justin's freshman year when I was out buying bed linens in Hills. It suddenly struck me that he would not be sleeping at home anymore, except for an occasional vacation. I stood in the aisle crying, mostly for the end of our tight little family of five. For some kids, it's not that final, but for Justin it was. He spent only a few more summers at home before he set off to make his own life. Two years later, Evan followed and then Colin joined the army five years later.
We have been blessed to have had thousands of students over our long careers and more fortunate still that some have become dear friends.
