Day 609: Little Skunk

200 lengths today
6110 lengths = 31.24 miles in August =
60.4 miles for the summer!  =
Icing my right elbow, thumb and neck, but I am very happy!

Now that I've hit that goal, maybe I can get something else done.  Two hours of swimming, rest and recovery time, plus photo editing and blog writing consumes a big chunk of the day.  The Quest video awaits my attention and I really can't put it off any longer.

We decided to go for ice cream this evening and pick up a few groceries.  When I opened the car door, a skunk ran out from under the car, down the driveway and across the street!  It did not spray me, the car or the garage!

We suspected that some animal was trapped in the garage last night because we found tools and a table knocked over.  Two huge metal clamps hit the van and dented it.  Something was scrambling around looking for an exit.  It could have been the skunk or maybe a raccoon.

Day 608: You're My Everything

Yes, I still have daylilies!  You're My Everything is a repeat bloomer so we will have a few daylilies into September.

This morning we spent hours sorting clothes trying to decide what will be appropriate for the range of temperatures we'll face in five different countries, onboard ship and in a variety of situations.  I want to limit the weight, but I'm a girl! I want to look good!

Day 607: Currency Calculations

Germany, Estonia and Finland all use the Euro, while Russia's currency is rubles, Sweden has the Krona and Denmark has the Krone (DKK).  Today,  I researched how much of each currency we might need for the few meals that we buy during our excursions or for souvenirs.  It's easy to order it online and have overnight delivery.   We have little baggies of leftover currency from different countries we have visited, but not the right kinds.

I also spent an hour at TJ Maxx looking for a new bag since Drizz't destroyed mine.  There's never a perfect bag.   I want one that is large enough to hold my camera, has a pocket to hold a water bottle, a zippered exterior compartment for my cell phone, enough space to hold a laptop if necessary and a broad shoulder strap.  The one I found has most of those traits, but not all.  Just eleven days till we depart!

58.3 miles!

Day 606: Brooklyn to Fredonia

Brooklyn D Train > 4 train > Grand Central Station > Metro North > White Plains > Pick up car > Rt. 287 West > Rt. 6 > Rt. 84 > Rt. 17> Rt. 86 >  Rt. 20 > HOME!

Important to note:  Never pack more than you can carry in one hand up three flights of stairs in a rushing crowd.

Years ago, when the boys were small, we took a camping trip across New England and Canada for nearly two weeks.  This was before we had cellphones, credit cards, ATMs.  This was back when we packed weeks of food in the car or camper and paid cash for the groceries.  We came home with $1.20, just enough to pay the last toll on the thruway.

Tonight when we got home, we had $16.00, just enough to pay for a pizza for dinner.  We spent three times more in four days than we did on those two weeks on the road with three kids.  But, with each experience, we build great memories with our family.

As soon as we arrived, I jumped in the pool and met my goal of 57 miles!
Every mile now is gravy and a new goal for next season!

Day 605: August in Brooklyn

A few notes about NYC in August:
If you have a choice, visit during a different month!
When it's too hot, ride the subway, anywhere, anytime!
Color reins in August!  Somber black and gray clothes take a break finally!
Our work is done.  Home tomorrow!

Day 604: Cat-astrophe

I have a good excuse for poor quality photos tonight.  You see, the cat peed on our camera.  Not my D3000, but still a great camera with video capability.  What!  Why, you may ask.  Because it was in a plastic bag and Drizz't pees on plastic bags.  April warned us, so we put all our things in the bathroom so that he couldn't get to them.  Someone left the door open for just a few moments and pow!  My bag and sweater were ruined, but Steve saved the camera, although it will always creep me out to use it.

After working with April all day, we rode into Manhattan and met the boys at a Japanese noodle restaurant.  Not bad food, but not my favorite meal. Very bland.  However, dessert was much better.  Just around the corner in Little Italy on Mulberry Street was a fantastic gelato shop.  YUM!

Day 603: Helping out

We drove across the state through fog and bumper to bumper traffic to NYC today.  The drive was easy in the west, but then right after Monticello, cars slowed to a crawl and backed up for miles.  Finally,  about 4:00 we arrived in White Plains and parked the car in a garage there.  The tricky part was figuring out the payment machine.  Fortunately, an officer helped us and we moved the car to the basement.  The Metro North train ride took only forty minutes.  Then we got on the four train at Grand Central, changed trains at Atlantic/Barclays and exited at 36th Street.  We were feeling pretty pleased with ourselves.  Although it was long and stressful, we learned a great deal that would make another trip much easier.

The hotel choice was not great, though.  Even though it is only three miles from Colin and April's apartment, Prospect Park lies between us and there is no subway connection.  All the money we saved by getting a cheaper hotel will go into paying for cab rides.

Dinner was at a fantastic Mexican restaurant called the Lincoln Arms Tavern, which sounds like it should offer traditional English food, not authentic Mexican.  I had tortilla soup with guacamole on top and a spicy, cheesy ear of corn.   Delicious!

The new apartment is huge by NYC standards!  Plus it has hardwood floors, granite counter tops, new appliances and fresh paint.  Here we are in Brooklyn the night of the VMAs that are being performed nearby.   We are just delighted to be able to spend these few days helping them out and being with our sons and daughter.

Day 602: Steve's 67th Birthday

For Steve's 67th birthday, Mary and I took him to the Celtic Festival in Mayville.  Bagpipe bands from all over the region performed and athletes participated in traditional events like caber tossing, sheep throwing, stone and hammer throwing.  No real sheep were harmed!  Athletes stabbed stuffed sacks with pitchforks and then threw the sack over a high bar behind them.  The caber tossing was fascinating.  The twelve foot long pole weighed 110 pounds and the athlete had to throw it so that it tumbled end over end.

We enjoyed a piping hot fish and chips lunch along beautiful Chautauqua Lake.  Mr. Franklin was there making his kettle corn.  He used to come to the Colonial Days that Steve ran when he was still teaching 7th grade.  Steve loves the sweet and salty crunch.

Steve and Mary's mom Betty was a Hall so this is one of their clans.
They also have ancestors from the Elliott and Masterton clans.

My maternal great grandfather was Chester Menzies so this is my clan.

Tomorrow, we are heading to NYC for a few days to see our family.  We can't wait to see them!  I swam 250 lengths today for a total of 56 miles this summer!  Just one more mile to tie the 2012 total.  It's probably a good idea to take a break from swimming cause my shoulders and elbows are very sore. When we return on Wednesday, I will only need 200 lengths to complete the goal.

Day 601: Farm Festival

Every small town in America has a community festival of some sort that brings people together.  Fredonia's is the Farm Festival and it's in its 45th year.  Originally, the centerpiece was farm produce and crafts, nightly entertainment, fireman's hose races and a Sunday parade.  The core activities remain and it continues to draw thousands of people.

We spent only an hour there tonight, but ran into dozens of friends and former students.  On Day Street, a stage had been set up for a band dressed like the Beatles in their Yellow Submarine costumes.   Food stands feature all the favorites: doughboys, waffles, taffy, candied apples, curly fries.   I love crispy, sweet waffles!

The last Infinity

Today, I completed 5000 lengths in August or 25.56 miles.
That's a total of 54.7 miles for the summer!

Day 600: President Obama in Buffalo

What a thrill to have President Obama speak at U.B. today!  He began a two day bus tour of Western NY and Pennsylvania to promote his new initiative to address the rising costs of higher education.  He said, and we agree, that college is an imperative, not a luxury, and it should be accessible to everyone.  The average debt of college grad is $26,000!  Our older sons are still paying off their debts.  It took us many years to pay off our share.  Colin has no debt, but only because he had the GI Bill.

It was move in day for the freshmen, so the UB campus was already bustling with activity.  The audience went wild when he entered the auditorium. Rebecca was there and so was our friend Cathy U.  I wish we could have seen him in person, but we watched the whole event from the landing of Air Force One to the motorcade out of the city.

Our own college campus is also very busy.  When we walked through today, we spotted people washing dorm windows, raking out the dirt along the new sidewalks, taking down the fences and the walkway to Houghton.   Some students have already returned, but most will arrive this weekend and our quiet little town will be transformed.  The nightly march to the bars, endless rescue calls, loud parties, red cups strewn on lawns and sidewalks, such fun!

53.3 miles!

Day 599: 42nd Anniversary

Life is so good!  Forty-two years of marriage, companionship and adventures.  Three healthy, happy sons and a daughter-in-law who is truly our daughter.  Satisfying work, loving family and friends,  excellent health with just a few hiccups.  Two cats sleeping at my feet.   A glorious pool where I spend many hours.  A safe hometown.  So many blessings for which I am grateful beyond measure.

Day 598: Fifty mile victory!

I  got seriously dehydrated yesterday from over exertion and paid the price over night.  All morning, I rehydrated in preparation for the longest swim of the year.  Two miles, four hundred lengths.  The temperature was ideal at 74 degrees.

After the first set of laps, I got a wonderful phone call, really, one of the best calls I've had in a long time.  Great news from our friend Rebecca's mom.  After two years and two months of fighting cancer, Rebecca has returned to college.  She has recovered much of her strength and is back pursuing her dreams.  Many obstacles lie ahead, but their family is more hopeful than ever.  As icing on the cake, she got tickets to hear President Obama speak at UB on Thursday.

The water warmed as I swam on throughout the afternoon.  Finally, I finished at 5:15 pm.  The grand total: 400 lengths today, 21.6 miles for August, 50.8 miles for the summer!

Day 597: Bee on marigold

Bee on lantana

Bee on marigold

Last week's Time Magazine published a cover story on the decline of the world's bee population.  Pesticides and diseases are the primary culprits of the massive bee colony deaths, but there is more to the mystery.   The global repercussions of their loss are horrifying.

Total up to today: 48.7 miles!

Day 596: Empty nest again

The last Little Business

We have been very fortunate this summer to see our kids more than usual.  The four kids took off for home this morning.  Amy and Mike dropped Colin and April off in Allentown to catch a bus into NYC  while they continued on to Delaware.  I was imagining the difficulty of Colin handling April's large suitcase and his backpack along with helping her on crutches.  Hopefully, they caught a nap along the way.  They were all exhausted after such a whirlwind trip.

I'm up to 48.3 miles!

Day 595: Bridesmaids

After hair, but before makeup and gowns

Mike (Amy's boyfriend) and Colin

What a delightful day!  April was in and out of the house, but we had Colin here for hours.  Then they were off to the wedding of two of their dear friends.  April was a bridesmaid and Amy officiated.  She went online, took a course and did the paperwork so  that she has a license to perform weddings.

We mowed and then I swam and swam and swam.  350 lengths, just short of two miles.  That gives me 17 miles for the month and 46 miles overall for the summer.  I'm just 11 miles short of tying last year's total.  Then we walked three miles in the evening for a total of 16 miles this week.

Day 594: August family time

We've been very fortunate to have more time with our kids than we expected.  Although they are tied up with wedding events, April also needs rest time.  Sitting on the back deck in the sunshine, she said this place is magical.  So quiet, peaceful and green.

One of April's friends happened to have a wheelchair and dropped it off at our house so we could transport her through the airport.  She and Amy arrived this afternoon, loaded down with luggage and ready for a wedding.  The bride is planning to attach streamers and cans to the wheel chair to make it festive as April goes down the aisle.  April has crutches but is unsteady on them.  They are staying at their mom's house since it is all on one floor.  Tomorrow, we go back to the airport for Colin.
