Day 548: Man of Steel

Faster than a speeding bullet
More powerful than a locomotive
Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound
 Look, up in the sky!
It's a bird, it's a plane
It's superman!

I needed no prompting to recall those words.  They are embedded in my brain.  When I was a very little girl, we got our first tv, a large blonde console that housed the tv, a radio and record player.  My brother and I were immediately enthralled.  We played Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.  I had a little red cowgirl skirt and vest with white fringe and wore a bandana over my face.  Mike had the full cowboy outfit, with boots and a western hat.  We rode our rocking horses and practiced drawing our pistols from the holsters slung around our hips.

But the best moments for me came when Superman appeared on screen.  I tied a blanket cape around my neck, leaped from the sofa and tables, zoomed around the apartment.  Oh, I wanted to fly so badly.  I dreamed of it, I craved it.  I wanted to be superman.  Not Lois Lane or super girl, superman!  Years later, I rushed down to Murphy's each week to spend my dime allowance on the latest Superman comic book. They were incredibly romantic.  So many exotic adventures!  Superman fell in love with a mermaid, he saved the world from Lex Luthor's machinations, showed compassion to Bizarro Superman and fell under the spell of red Kryptonite.

Tonight's movie was full of violence and destruction, so it was not my favorite.  The casting was excellent.  I loved Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent and Russell Crowe as Jor-el.  Henry Cavill was a super hot Superman.  The cast had potential, but the weak script and excessive battles with General Zod went on far too long.
