Day 980: Rest day

No swimming today, though we did walk over four miles.  My shoulders, arms and eyes needed to rest.  A cool front moved through our area and dropped the temperature almost 20 degrees, but the water stayed at 69.  My body was just too sore from yesterday's marathon session to go in.  We escaped to Buffalo to shop and had crepes and gelato for lunch.  Whenever we encounter a gelato stand, we must try it, and this was delicious!

I found a National Geographic Road Atlas, the adventure edition, that highlights America's 100 top outdoor destinations, 24 of our National Parks, and provides maps for all the states, Canadian provinces and Mexico.  We'd never drive in Mexico, but I do want to explore all the provinces as well as the states.  I've already started researching a route west for next fall.  We're talking to friends who have already traveled west to get their recommendations.  We won't do it all at once, but if we can hit a few new state every year, that would be great.  Anna was just in Argentina for a week and that country is high on our list too.  We topped off the day with a yummy dinner at Whiskey Hill.  It's never disappointing.

On our rambling walk through the college, we discovered several cellophane sculptures tucked into odd places around campus.  We tried to get into the new science center, but it was locked.  Maybe during the week, we can finally see the inside since we've watched its progress from groundbreaking.

Day 979: IFLY767

Day 84: Best (weather) day of the summer
Air temp: 86
Water temp: 72
Lengths: 430!  (2.2 miles and a new personal best!)
Total miles: 89.2

It was a spectacular day.  Hot, breezy, peaceful, and no lawnmowers.  Our warm front will soon be hit by a cool front and we expect ferocious thunder and lightning.  It was my last chance to swim for the entire day and I did.

Over the Labor Day weekend, my sister Nancy presented each of us with an extraordinary gift.  A daylily called IFLY767, hybridized and named after her beloved husband, Glenn.  He spent thirty years as a pilot, the last ten or so as the captain of a 767.  She contacted a friend of hers, a hybridizer, who had created a new daylily and Nancy had it named for Glenn.  Nancy thought long and hard about what she might call the lily,  considered all the things he loved to do and chose his plane.  It's the same acronym that he had on his license plate.

She bought all the scapes of the beautiful deep purple lily with a white ruffle and presented them to her son and daughter, his sister Donna, three of his friends, our brother Steve, Laurie and me.  We are the only ones who possess them.  Even the hybridizer did not keep a plant.  So, she gave us a truly unique and rare plant in honor of her unique husband.

Day 978: September blooms

Day 83:
Water temp: 70
Air temp: 82 ish
Lengths: 320
Total miles: 87!

Today may have been one of the last two 80+ days of the season so I was determined to rack up the miles.  By the last laps, I couldn't raise my arms any more.

Rachel is free from her Chautauqua obligations, but her house is so torn up that she can't live there yet.  The insurance adjuster is getting a service to address all the mold in the basement.  The old floors are ripped up, but the new floors are not installed.  There's no fixtures or floor in the bathroom and the water is still off.  After a short trip, she'll be spending some nights with us till she can move back in.

Several of the late blooming lilies were glorious today.  The vibrant color and luscious blooms provide such joy.  I started cutting back the lilies along the front path and in the west garden.  Now the mums and snapdragons will be the features.

Day 977: Downloaded

Day 82:
Water temp: 70
Air temp: 78 ish
Lengths: 270
Total miles: 85.4

100 miles seems like an attainable goal now.  Two more steamy days, then dropping off to 70 for the weekend and then back up to mid seventies.  Certainly, they'll be better than many of the days in July and August when I suffered through the cold.

All the Quest video was downloaded without incident.  Surprising, actually.  Tomorrow, I'll begin the editing.  All of the still photos are already edited, so that process shouldn't take too long.  Maybe I can do this one in under 40 hours.

Day 976: 84 miles

Day 81:
Air temp: 85, then down to 72
Water temp: 70
Lengths: 300
Total miles: 84!

I am going to start downloading backpacking video so that I can begin the editing process.  It's September and time for serious work.  Steve has already finished the schedule, except for the Silver Creek meetings, and now I must design a new page to include in the parent packet on renting equipment.  It's one of the topics that spurs most questions.  Of course, I will include a passage that says, "Do NOT wash the backpack in the washing machine!"

In Laurie's tiny yard, every inch of her garden is artfully arranged in little vignettes.

Day 975: The night before school begins!

Day 80:
Air temp: 85
Water temp: 71
Lengths: 260
Total miles: 82.4

There's not much that's more exciting than the first day of school.  All over town, kids and teachers are lying awake, anticipating a new beginning! Clocks are set, backpacks packed with supplies, clothes laid out, lunches ready.

It didn't matter how many years I taught, I never slept the night before.  Through the night, I constantly rehearsed what I would say, how I would greet my new students, how the lesson would proceed.  I never got bored all those 39 years because there was such variety.  Meeting and getting to know new students, learning new content, monitoring the news, designing new projects, always working to improve my instruction... it was invigorating and thrilling!  Others might not think that teaching is an exciting profession, but I loved every moment.  I wish nothing but the best for all the children and teachers starting fresh this week.

It was a long trip home, but the traffic was easy.  Steve drove the whole way.   He's such a good man. I unpacked, mowed the lawn, swam 1.3 miles, watered the pots, cooked dinner, talked with Evan.  A great day!
