Day 1493: The Cassadaga team

Exhausting, but highly successful day.  Cassadaga was incredibly impressive again.  Sixteen kids and three adults!  The principal came to the first class along with Kelly and the two new gentlemen.  One of them is the director of curriculum and instruction and he told me they are orienting their entire curriculum toward outdoor education including archery, skiing and now backpacking.  He is pursuing a health and wellness grant and they already have seven hundred dollars of donations toward equipment.   The energy level in that school is inspiring.

So, only 39 students from Fredonia enrolled.  That's down eleven from last year.  Very disappointing.  I know the school population has decreased overall, but that doesn't explain the declining percentage of kids participating.   Brocton stands at four.  That was the minimum for continuing the program there.  Sadly, the two boys did not deliver their materials today as promised.  Silver Creek schools were closed today due to a power outage so we have to wait till tomorrow for their registrations.  Josh says he has seven kids.   So, 66 campers total if that holds true.  We used to have 66 just from Fredonia.  I had predicted 70.  Plus, we have twenty-five terrific student leaders and an outstanding group of adults.  It will be an awesome backpacking season.  Just wish more kids would take advantage of the opportunity.
