Day 309: Eleven Echoes of Autumn

I hosted an emotional Penelope meeting this morning.  Several members are going through some difficult transitions and their writing reflects their journeys.   Everyone always enjoys the crispy waffles and deviled eggs and today I added homemade vegetable soup because one friend has given up carbs.  She has lost 40 pounds on this diet!

Steve's sister Mary organized a faculty recital of 20th century chamber music that they performed this afternoon.  Her quartet performed a unique piece called Eleven Echoes of Autumn composed by George Crumb.  She plucked and pounded the wires on the inside of the piano in addition to playing the keys.  The flutist and clarinetist stood and played into the piano's raised lid.  The composition had an eerie science fiction feel to it.  We have attended at least twenty of her concerts, but we are not permitted to photograph the artists during the performance.  Fortunately, it was a small crowd, so afterward we went on stage so I could capture Mary and her beautiful Steinway.
